The theory and practice of 'workplace democracy'

I have mentioned several times on this blog the idea of a legitimation crisis. I take this idea to mean the disconnect between who we think ourselves to be (i.e., "free" people) and the reality of work in the corporate-capitalist state (i.e., "free" slaves). One antidote to this may lie in bringing the inner structure of corporations into alignment with deliberative democracy. This means restructuring the workplace so that workers have a say in the policies which effect them, who gets to be the boss, employee shareholding, pay scales, profit-sharing, etc. For an excellent overview with case studies see the following article by George Cheney, professor of communications, University of Montana: http://www.wisc.edu/uwcc/info/democ.html
